Nikki Gabriel is a knitter/designer extraordinaire. She is based in Napier, NZ, where she produces stunning seasonal collections; she is also currently undertaking a PhD in Melbourne. The latter brings Nikki back to our city periodically and, during her most recent visit, occasioned a special pop-up sale in our very own Abbotsford Convent studio. What an absolute pleasure. This blog post is a bit tardy because, in fact, the official pop-up began and ended last weekend - however, I've been able to retain a collection of pieces, including but not limited to those shown above. With these photographs, I've aimed to indicate the array of styles and yarns in Nikki's repertoire, as well as the rather enticing sale prices, which range from $100 to $400. These are all one-off pieces - samples created both for Nikki's current collection and for varied projects of the past (such as the brilliant Construction Knitting project, as well as collaborative work with Akira Isogawa). Nikki's work is just so beautiful and masterful - I'd really love you to see it, and it will only be in the studio for another few days. As usual, we are open on Saturday (Aug. 3) from 10am to 3pm. You are also welcomed to email me to arrange an appointment to see and try on the garments on Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday - leah@millysleeping.com. If you are out of town/interstate, I can do my best to send more images and talk through sizing, also via email (or instagram: @milly_sleeping).

Textile Table Wear

Textile Table Wear signals a new phase for Milly Sleeping. It's an ongoing project, and a means to synthesise our varied work and our varied products. At its heart is a love of textiles, colour, fine detail and hand craft. A small 'preview selection' has just been uploaded to the online shop - indicating a [...]

New showroom at the Abbotsford Convent

It was actually *after* Janette and I had made the decision to close Milly Sleeping that I first became aware that tenants were being sought for the Abbotsford Convent's Sacred Heart Building - which was undergoing significant restoration for the first time (according to the Convent site, it's quite possibly not been in use since the 1970s). Although I can't say [...]

Saying goodbye

*It is with some sense of separation anxiety that I write. The closure of Milly Sleeping at Elgin Street, after 12 years, is a big step. However, I also feel content that it is the right time for both Leah and I. From day one, I have been amazed at the talent, [...]

Group exhibition 'Unusual'.

I'm proud to announce that Milly Sleeping will shortly be hosting its first group exhibit in years ...Contributing artists were invited to make new works that somehow differ from their usual output. This presented much potential for experimentation... perhaps the use of a different material, a different technique, or the chance to work towards a [...]
